Laikipia Wilderness Main Camp
A family-run, unfenced tented camp on a hillside above the Ewaso Narok River in central Laikipia, known for walking safaris, wild dog tracking and black leopard sightings.
Settle into Laikipia Wilderness Main Camp
Main Camp is the original and largest of the Laikipia Wilderness camps, run since 2012 by guide Steve Carey and his family on the Ol Doinyo Lemboro Conservancy, about 21,000 acres of central Laikipia. It sits on a hillside close to the Ewaso Narok River, facing a salt lick, inside the home range of a much-photographed black leopard. There are six canvas tents with verandas: two doubles and four family units in which a double tent adjoins a twin or triple tent. Bathrooms are open to the sky but fully plumbed. Meals are taken together at one table, Wi-Fi reaches only the central area, and the camp is unfenced and deliberately simple rather than luxurious. The activity list is long: shared game drives and early night drives, walks with armed guides, wild dog and lion tracking, mountain biking, fly-camping, fishing, bush meals, rock scrambling and, when the river allows, swimming and rafting. Dedicated black leopard vehicles can be booked for priority at sightings. It suits sociable travellers, families with children, solo guests and photographers who want an active, unpretentious safari.
